Friday, April 02, 2004 The Birdie:It was three in the afternoon and a very hot day. The sun was blinding and the heat scorching. I was in my study room studying for my exam. The balcony door was wide open, the windows had curtains and the fan was on. I was as usual stretched out in my chair with my feet on the table when I heard a bird chirping at the window. Now when you have an exam two days away, the last thing you do is hear every bird sing but there I was bored out of my senses and there was a bird on my window chirping in a monotonous way. It kept on with a 'chirp, chirp' every few minutes as if saying 'Anybody home?". About four 'chirp chirps' later, I decided to put my book down and have a look at it. So me turned in my seat and had a good look at it. It was a small bird. One of those little brown- black ones. I believe it was a sparrow. Anyway, the minute I looked at it, it went with a chirp, chirp, chirp again. I whistled back mimicking it. And then it went with a 'chirp, chirp' again. This continued for quite sometime until I realized that we were actually communicating with each other. The conversation was going like this: Birdie: anybody home? Me: Yes, may I help you? B: Can I have a glass of water please? M: A glass of water? (*a bird wants a glass of water?*) B: yes. M: (*oh well it's a hot day but . . . a glass?*) the glass is twice your size, you'll drawn in it. B: Ok, can you give me half a glass? M: err...(*how will a birdie drink from a glass?*)...Will a mug do? B: fine. M: Come on in then. Go straight out of the room, to the right and then the right again. The mug is in the bucket in the bathroom. There is enough water there. Drink to your fill. To my utter surprise, the bird did fly in and it did go into the bathroom and it did drink the water. The only difference was that it didn't follow my directions. It flew in through the bathroom window. Oh well, what can I say? Yesterday, when I was studying, I heard the bird again. I don't know if it was the same one but I did hear a bird in my bathroom. I didn't have time to check but in the evening when I went in for 'wadhu' before Maghreb, what I saw really surprised me. My bathroom was a mess. There were bird droppings on the faucet and on the bucket too. Talk about courtesy. I invited the birdie in and it messes my bathroom up. Koi tameez hai ya nahine? Abb kya keh kar daantein ussey? Bird-brain? P.S: I had my first exam yesterday. The next is on Monday. The exam went bad. Period. POSTED BY KHATOON |
